A lot of us don’t often think of how much we rely on our vehicles and there’s no quicker way to dread your daily commute than by driving a cluttered vehicle or breaking down on the roadside. Let’s try to avoid both here at the beginning of the new year and year-round. CLEAN MACHINE: There’s nothing like sliding into a clean car as you embark on a road trip. You are ready for the road! So grab a trash bag and let’s make it happen by throwing away old receipts, empty soda cans – just empty out your entire vehicle. A thorough wipe down with antiseptic wipes is a smart idea since the pandemic is still going strong. As you are finishing up, only put back the items you’ll need for your commutes like your favorite sunglasses, face masks, and hand sanitizer.
EMERGENCY KIT: CHECK! Emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Given that, consider creating your own emergency road kit, which is always handy just in case. At a minimum, your road kit should contain extra face masks, an ice scraper, jumper cables, an extra pair of gloves, a hat, antiseptic wipes, and an emergency thermal blanket. It’s a good idea to keep all your gear in a weatherproof bag or tote box. These items are especially important to have during the winter season because, if you have an accident or car trouble, you can stay warm while help is on the way. Another essential item to have in your emergency kit is a flashlight with fresh batteries, and maybe have an extra set of batteries on hand too. You’ll want to be prepared for anything, so expect the unexpected.
HEALTHY VEHICLE: Performing auto maintenance on your vehicle is something you’ll definitely appreciate it in the long run. Speaking of the long run, your vehicle’s engine will live longer and perform better with regular maintenance, and you’ll see better fuel efficiency, resale value, and fewer costly repairs. At all times, your vehicle’s engine should be properly lubricated and all fluid levels should be at operating levels. Routine oil changes are also a must, and between oil changes, you should get into the routine of checking your engine’s oil levels frequently. Every other time you get gas is a good rule.
TIRESOME TIRES: Tired tires can be a silent threat to your safety, putting you at risk of a blow-out on the road, so proper tire maintenance and replacement are critical. Keep a working tire gauge tucked away in the glove box of your vehicle and use it regularly. They’re cheap and come in both analog and digital versions. The recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) is between 30 to 35 for most tires, but check your owner’s manual. Also, check the tread depth of each tire to see if your tires need replacing.
