Jeep Wrangler off-roading with no doors

Nothing says freedom like a doors-off, top-down Jeep. One of the best parts of owning a Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator is feeling the wind in your hair as you cruise the open road or take on a new trail. At Hebert’s Town and Country Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Shreveport, Louisiana, we love helping our customers experience that exhilarating thrill.

Of course, first things first. Before you can enjoy that liberating drive, you have to know how to take the doors off your Jeep! Luckily, removing your doors is a quick and easy task.

Step 1: Before you start, gather the necessary tools: a Torx wrench, a sheet or towel, and a container to store nuts and bolts. You’ll also want to ensure the side mirrors are folded in, the window is rolled down, and the safety strap is unfastened for any doors you are removing.

Step 2: Next, if your Jeep is equipped with power windows and door locks, you’ll need to unplug the wiring. This will be somewhere between the door hinge and the underside of the dashboard, most likely obscured by fabric or cloth. Locate the plastic wiring connection and carefully detach it.

Step 3: Using the appropriate-sized Torx wrench, remove the nuts and bolts securing the door hinges. Be gentle during this step — you don’t want to damage the exterior paint or the bolt itself. Once removed, place the nuts and bolts in your container so you can easily find them later.

Step 4: Now you can simply lift the door straight up and off your Jeep! Reach through the open window and lift from the armrest for the most secure grip. Once the door is off the vehicle, lay it on top of your tarp or towel to protect it from any scratches. Repeat steps 2-4 for the other doors you are wanting to remove.

Five Ways to Enhance Your Jeep Gladiator

Step 5: Lastly, before you drive without your doors, you’ll want to disable the automatic door lights and alarm. Start by disconnecting the negative terminal of your car battery — this step is crucial to preventing any dangerous electrical mishaps! Next, consult your owner’s manual to locate the fuse box. Once the fuse box is open, carefully remove the fuse labeled “Door Jam Defeat.” Place the fuse in your container with the nuts and bolts. Close the fusebox, reconnect the negative terminal of your car battery, and you are ready to ride!
